The Netherlands has commissioned the design of a 12-metre uncrewed anti-submarine vessel carrying a Thales Compact FLASH dipping sonar, one for each of its new anti-submarine frigates, with the design phase due to finish in the first quarter of 2027.

The sensor is the substance of the announcement. FLASH is the dipping-sonar family Thales built for helicopters — lowered on a cable to a chosen depth rather than dragged behind the platform — and the Compact variant is the smaller member of it. Putting it on a 12-metre uncrewed boat moves a helicopter-class low-frequency sensor onto a hull that a frigate can carry and launch, and a dipping sonar can be placed below the thermal layer that shields a submarine from a surface ship's own bow array. Working depth is given as about 750 metres.

The industrial route is domestic and consortium-based. COMMIT has commissioned Dutch Naval Design — the standing partnership between the ministry, Dutch industry, universities and research institutes — and platform work runs through a "USV Alliance" formed under it. This is a design commission, not a build contract: no unit numbers beyond one per frigate, no value, no production decision.

A frigate that launches its own dipping sonar changes where the frigate can afford to be. Towed and hull-mounted arrays tie detection to the ship's own position and speed; a detached hull carrying the sensor separates the search from the searcher, which is the same logic France is applying to mine warfare with SLAM-F in the same fortnight. Großwald recorded the programme in Signal No. 116, where the sonar was described as a towed set; the commissioning documents describe an active dipping sonar, and the distinction is the point of the design. The observable is Q1 2027: whether the design phase closes on schedule and with a build decision attached.
