Scope

NATO's exercise calendar is published incrementally: planning conferences run 12–18 months ahead of execution, and dates are confirmed piecemeal by SHAPE and national ministries, winter drills first. A complete official 2027 picture will not exist until well into the year.

This page collates what is on record now. Entries are labelled confirmed when a NATO command or national ministry has named the exercise, projected when only a series cadence supports them. Confirmations are logged with source and date as they land. The 2026 guide covers the current year.

Flagship Drills to Watch in 2027

The Steadfast Defender Year

STEADFAST DEFENDER 27 (dates TBC, alliance-wide). The triennial flagship returns. NATO's Joint Warfare Centre hosted the main planning conference in June 2026; SHAPE schedules and conducts the exercise as a federation of national and NATO drills involving all NATO headquarters, across multiple areas of operational responsibility. The precedent is Steadfast Defender 24 — roughly 90,000 personnel across a January-to-May campaign from the North Atlantic to the eastern flank. Whether 2027 matches that scale is open: the planning language emphasises linked national exercises over a single monolithic deployment, the same structure as the 2026 season. The national building blocks — Germany's Quadriga cluster, Romania's Dacia-linked programme, the Nordic winter drills — are likely to declare their SD27 affiliations one by one over the autumn. One national commitment is already on record: the United Kingdom will exercise the call-up of elements of its roughly 95,000-strong strategic reserve within the series, the Chief of the Defence Staff told the Commons Defence Committee, and the Armed Forces minister confirmed to the Lords National Resilience Committee on 7 September 2026 that the call-out, equipping and use of reservists will be rehearsed in next year's exercise programme.

STEADFAST DART 27 (dates TBC, North Macedonia). The first named building block. A SHAPE, JFC Naples and NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy delegation surveyed the Krivolak training area, Pepelishte camp and Petrovec barracks in June 2025, per the North Macedonian General Staff — the Allied Reaction Force deployment exercise moves to the southern flank after its 2026 iteration ran into Germany under JFC Brunssum. That rotation is the tell: the ARF construct is being exercised against a different reinforcement axis each cycle, and a Skopje-hosted iteration puts the load on the Adriatic and North Macedonian corridors rather than the North Sea ports.

The Recurring Backbone

VALIANT DEFENDER 27 (winter–spring window, dates TBC, Norway — confirmed at planning stage). Norway's odd-year winter slot, held by Joint Viking in 2023 and 2025, is being planned under a new name. Bjørnar Aas, who leads joint-exercise planning at the Norwegian Joint Headquarters, described Valiant Defender in Forsvarets Forum in March 2025 as "Cold Response 2026 on steroids": a large NATO-facing exercise that Norway will run and lead, with interest signalled from the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Germany, and a footprint that may extend into Finland. The geography is not settled — Indre Troms and Nordland are the working assumption, with the option of going further south, as Trident Juncture did in Trøndelag in 2018. It is a planning name rather than an announcement; the calendar carries it as confirmed because a serving headquarters planner named it, and will re-label it if Oslo announces under another title. The open question from the Joint Viking years stands: the scale of US participation.

NATO TIGER MEET 2027 (dates TBC, Italy). The Tiger Association has confirmed Gioia del Colle Air Base as host — the Italian Eurofighter wing's home, which last hosted in 2023. Dates typically land in the May window.

SWORD 27 (dates TBC, several European countries — confirmed at planning stage). The US Army's signature land exercise in Europe returns for a second year under the post-DEFENDER name. Allied and partner planning teams met at the Spanish Army's Division San Marcial headquarters in Burgos on 25–29 May 2026, per the Spanish Army; more than 15,000 personnel are expected across several European countries. Sword 26 used forces already in theatre to validate NATO's regional defence plans across eight countries rather than rehearsing transatlantic reinforcement; whether the 2027 iteration keeps that construct, and whether it declares an affiliation to Steadfast Defender 27, has not been stated.

QUADRIGA 27 / AIR DEFENDER 27 (March–May 2027; air phase 3–14 May, northern Germany — scheduled). The Bundeswehr's national exercise series is the first 2027 entry with published dates. The Luftwaffe's press office said on 17 August that the series runs from March to May 2027 across land, sea and air on the defence of Germany and NATO territory, and that Air Defender 27 forms its air core: around 200 combat and support aircraft from allied nations concentrated at military airfields in northern Germany, flying mainly over the North Sea and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with civil-aviation disruption expected across the whole window as in June 2023. Air Defender 23 brought 250 aircraft from 25 nations under German lead; the 2027 edition is framed as a repeat at similar scale. Two things are not yet stated: whether Quadriga 27 is Germany's contribution to the Steadfast Defender 27 series, as Quadriga 24 was to Steadfast Defender 24, and the names of the land and maritime sub-exercises. One dpa carrier printed the air dates as March; the Luftwaffe's own wording, carried by Tagesspiegel and bundeswehr-journal, is 3–14 May. The Army's own exercise falls in the same window: Land Shield 27 runs mainly in April and May 2027 with large parts of the Heer and a deployment of elements of the 10th Panzer Division to Lithuania, the Inspector of the Army, Christian Freuding, told dpa in March 2026. Whether it nests inside Quadriga 27 has not been stated.

FORMIDABLE SHIELD 27 (May window, projected). Europe's largest integrated air and missile defence live-fire exercise runs on a biennial odd-year cadence — 2021, 2023, 2025 — which puts the next iteration in 2027. The 2025 edition brought about 7,000 personnel, 17 ships and 11 nations to the Hebrides and Andøya ranges for live intercepts against subsonic, supersonic and ballistic targets. No announcement yet; given the pace of European GBAD procurement between iterations, the 2027 shot list will be read closely.

The rest of the backbone runs on published cadences; each entry is listed in the calendar with its projection basis:

Winter–spring — DYNAMIC FRONT (fires), DYNAMIC MANTA (Mediterranean ASW), SEA SHIELD (Black Sea), AFRICAN LION, SPRING STORM (Estonia), DYNAMIC MONGOOSE (North Atlantic ASW) and FORMIDABLE SHIELD (IAMD live-fire), alongside the confirmed SWORD 27 and Germany's QUADRIGA 27 cluster with AIR DEFENDER 27 (3–14 May) as its air core.

Summer — BALTOPS at its 56th iteration, RAMSTEIN FLAG, SEA BREEZE (annual since 1997) and the NEPTUNE STRIKE carrier series.

Autumn — REPMUS unmanned-systems experimentation (Portugal), NAMEJS (Latvia), the STEADFAST NOON nuclear-deterrence serial, and CYBER COALITION (Tallinn).

The Sentry Activities

Baltic Sentry (since January 2025), Eastern Sentry (since September 2025) and Arctic Sentry (since February 2026) are persistent vigilance activities, not exercises — they do not appear in the calendar rows. All three are expected to continue into 2027, subject to SACEUR posture decisions; any formal change will be logged here.

How This Calendar Works

Three evidence tiers. Scheduled means official dates are published. Confirmed, dates pending means a NATO command or national ministry has named the exercise — a planning conference, a site reconnaissance, a host announcement — but not dated it. Projected from cycle means the entry rests only on a stated series cadence; it is a forecast, labelled as one.

Provenance per record. Every entry in the underlying dataset carries its evidence basis, the naming source, and a last-verified date. Sources are NATO commands (SHAPE, JWC, AIRCOM, MARCOM, STRIKFORNATO), national defence ministries, and the units themselves.

Update discipline. Confirmations are folded in on official release; every change is logged below with its date. A wrong projection is corrected and the correction logged — the prior state stays on the record.

15 September 2026 — Land Shield 27 added, confirmed with dates pending: the Inspector of the Army, Christian Freuding, has said the exercise runs mainly in April and May 2027, with elements of the 10th Panzer Division deploying to Lithuania (dpa). Steadfast Defender 27: the United Kingdom will exercise the call-up of part of its strategic reserve within it (Armed Forces minister to the Lords National Resilience Committee, 7 September; Chief of the Defence Staff to the Commons Defence Committee).

10 September 2026 — Sword 27 confirmed, dates pending (previously projected). USAREUR-AF-led, more than 15,000 personnel expected across several European countries; planning conference held in Burgos, 25–29 May (Spanish Army, 2 June).

1 September 2026 — Quadriga 27 scheduled for March–May 2027 (previously projected). Air Defender 27 added, 3–14 May 2027. Both per the Luftwaffe, 17–19 August. Correction: the Joint Viking 27 projection is replaced by Valiant Defender 27, confirmed with dates pending (Norway's Joint Headquarters in Forsvarets Forum, 20 March 2025).

When will Steadfast Defender 27 take place?

NATO has not published dates. The main planning conference concluded at the Joint Warfare Centre in June 2026. The 2024 iteration ran January to May; if SD27 follows that pattern the first movements would begin in the opening weeks of 2027, but that timing is a projection, not an announcement.

How big will Steadfast Defender 27 be?

What does “projected from cycle” mean?

The exercise has not been announced for 2027 — but its series runs on a stated rhythm (annual, biennial) that puts an iteration in the 2027 window. The calendar names that basis for each entry. Projections can be wrong; when one is, the correction is logged, not overwritten.
