Hisdesat contracted Airbus Defence and Space as prime for SpainSat NG-III on 31 July, with Thales Alenia Space supplying the UHF and military Ka-band payloads, for launch in the third quarter of 2030.

The satellite serves Spain's defence ministry, NATO and allied forces, and the specification is written around resilience rather than throughput. The X-band active antennas are credited with the coverage of sixteen fixed antennas and with reconfiguring their beams up to a thousand times a second, which is an electronic-warfare property as much as a communications one: a beam that moves that fast can be steered away from a jammer. The platform is hardened against high-altitude nuclear effects and electromagnetic pulse, and specified to NATO standards for signals intelligence, anti-jamming and anti-spoofing.

The industrial split runs through Spain on both sides. Airbus in Spain builds the X-band payload and holds satellite-level design, integration and test; Thales Alenia Space in Spain builds the UHF and military Ka-band payloads and leads the communications module at Tres Cantos.

This is a replacement, not an expansion, and that distinguishes it from most European space procurement announced this year. SpainSat NG-II was launched last year and struck by space debris during orbit raising; NG-III restores the pair Hisdesat intended to operate, with NG-I already up since 2025. The order therefore prices the cost of losing a satellite rather than the cost of adding one — and it dates that recovery at four and a half years, launch to operations in early 2031. Großwald recorded the award in Signal No. 115, where it was read as extending the constellation; the replacement framing is the correct one. A sovereign milsatcom gap measured in years is the reference point against which the EU's IRIS² timetable should be read.
