Netherlands Signs Intent for One Saab GlobalEye, Pooled With Sweden's Three, Delivery 2031 and Access to the Swedish Aircraft From 2028

The Dutch ministry's stated reason is availability: the Netherlands has no aircraft of its own for the task, uses the ageing NATO AWACS fleet, and with one GlobalEye can decide more independently where and when the aircraft is deployed, including for operations and exercises. Its text says the Netherlands can already deploy the Swedish aircraft from 2028; Stockholm's says Dutch crews begin training on them then. Both name the pool as the operating model, aircraft allocated to whichever crews need them, and both cast the arrangement as a Dutch and Swedish contribution to a complete surveillance capability for Europe alongside NATO's. Jonson called it deepening the two countries' defence cooperation and taking "greater responsibility for Europe's collective defence".

Saab's own statement is narrower: an intention to procure, no contract, no order, and a readiness to "await the next steps of the procurement process". The NATO decision of July, up to ten aircraft at about USD 4.5 billion on Reuters' figure, is in the same state, formal negotiation through NSPA and no order announced. Sweden's third aircraft was ordered in June 2024; France ordered two late last year; an unnamed Middle Eastern customer ordered two in July for delivery in 2030. The Dutch airframe would be delivered a year after that.

The Netherlands is buying into an operating model whose owner is Sweden, not NATO, and the 2028 access is what makes a 2031 delivery tolerable. Every GlobalEye delivery date now public falls in 2030 or later, so the pool is the instrument that converts a place in Saab's queue into an aircraft a Dutch crew can fly within two years, at the price of a national aircraft that is never wholly national. How pooled airframes are split between Dutch, Swedish and alliance tasking is not public, and the Geilenkirchen fleet, which both countries also fund, will draw on the same production line. The two documents to watch are the Dutch parliamentary letter, which carries the price, and the NSPA contract, which fixes where the alliance aircraft sit in that queue.
