Sweden and Naval Group signed a contract for four FDI frigates in Stockholm on 31 August, a deal Opex360 prices at about EUR 4.3 billion, with the configuration reported the following day showing an air-defence-and-anti-submarine hull that leaves out the cells a naval cruise missile would need.
Granholm and Pommellet signed aboard the Amiral Ronarc'h, the lead ship of France's own FDI class, with Macron and Kristersson present and Jonson and Vautrin signing a separate strategic-partnership framework alongside. Sweden's own release states no value; Opex360's EUR 4.3 billion figure is the only one in circulation and stays attributed to that outlet. The Luleå class delivers on a staggered schedule — Luleå in 2030, Norrköping in 2032, Trelleborg in 2033, Halmstad in 2034 — a four-year span across four hulls of the same design.
The configuration, reported by hartpunkt the day after signing, is where the Swedish ship parts from the French one. Sea Giraffe 1X runs beside the Seafire radar; Aster 30 sits in Sylver A50 cells with CAMM-ER in cold-launch cells replacing Aster 15; RBS15 substitutes for Exocet and Torped 47 for MU90; a 57 mm Bofors gun, a 40 mm mount, Trackfire remote stations and CAPTAS-4 towed sonar complete the fit. Jonson said the four ships "will triple Sweden's current air defence capability"; Rear Admiral Johan Norlén called the class "uncrewed where possible, crewed where required". The Sylver A70 cells that would carry a naval cruise missile are absent — a deliberate omission, not a placeholder, since nothing else in the reported fit needs the space they would occupy.
Sweden's choice reads against Lisbon's, not just Paris's baseline. Portugal passed over the FDI for the larger Italian FREMM EVO, and Signal No. 136 recorded Stockholm signing the compact design that Lisbon declined — a capability split visible in two contracts rather than a doctrine to be inferred from either.
