Isar Aerospace's Spectrum reached orbit on its second flight from Andøya on 5 September, meeting eight days after signature the condition attached to the EUR 197.8 million European Launcher Challenge contract ESA signed with the company on 28 August.
Spectrum lifted off at 22:12 CEST and deployed payloads chosen through the German Space Agency's microlauncher competition and funded under ESA Boost!, the company said. Signal No. 140 carried the European Launcher Challenge contracts eight days earlier — Isar at EUR 197.8 million, RFA at EUR 186.9 million, PLD at EUR 169 million, each conditional on an orbital flight before 2028 — and noted that none of the three companies had yet flown one. Isar has now cleared that bar; RFA and PLD have not. Daniel Metzler, the company's chief executive: "Launch continues to be the largest bottleneck for the global space industry and from today on, there is a true alternative for commercial and institutional customers."
Isar says vehicles three through seven are already in production, its 40,000-square-metre plant is sized for up to forty launches a year, and a second launch pad is under construction in Nova Scotia. hartpunkt, reporting two days after the flight, links it to the Bundeswehr's responsive-space concept, under which the Schwert and Schild satellites are intended to fly on German-built rockets.
A conditional subsidy just became a live comparison between three companies. ESA wrote the same orbital-by-2028 clause into all three Launcher Challenge contracts on the same day; Isar's flight turns a shared deadline into a running scoreboard, and RFA's and PLD's own flights, whenever they come, will now be read against Andøya rather than against the contract text alone.
