The first hulls of Norway's Leopard 2A8NOR order were loaded onto the Color Fantasy ferry at Kiel on 27 April for delivery to Norwegian Armed Forces depots, marking the start of a 54-tank delivery cycle under the 2023 KNDS Munich framework.
The 2A8NOR variant is built to the same configuration baseline as the Bundeswehr's 18-hull 2A8 order. The Norwegian fleet replaces the Leopard 2A4NO in service since 1981, providing a structural uplift in armour, fire control and active protection through the integrated Trophy hard-kill system. Deliveries run 2026 to 2028, with Norwegian acceptance trials at the Rena training area expected from autumn 2026.
Norway becomes the second 2A8 export operator after Lithuania, which received its first hulls in late 2025 under the €950 million 2024 contract for the new tank brigade near the Belarusian border. The two export tracks share the same KNDS Munich production line and the same redesignation pattern — 2A7+ developmental builds re-baselined as 2A8 once the Trophy active protection system and the digital fire-control update are integrated.
The delivery aligns with Norway's broader land-domain rebuild under the 2024 long-term plan, which combines the Leopard 2A8NOR replacement, the K9 self-propelled howitzer fleet expansion and the CV90 mid-life upgrade announced in 2025. The 2A8NOR is the heaviest combat element of that programme and the principal NATO contribution to the Nordic-flank ground deterrent — the export-cadence test for KNDS Munich framed in Signal No. 47.
