Saab announced on 28 August a SEK 1.2 billion order from Finland for the laser-beam-riding RBS 70 NG, with options attached — a recapitalisation of the very-short-range air defence layer the Finnish Defence Forces has operated since 2008.
The NG variant upgrades the missile's guidance to automatic target tracking on a laser beam-riding link and adds night-operation capability, but the order keeps Finland in the same tactical category it has used for eighteen years: man-portable and vehicle-mounted point defence against low-flying aircraft and drones, not a networked medium-range system with its own radar and battle-management layer. The order covers systems, training, spare parts and maintenance equipment; Saab's release gives no delivery schedule and does not state the option's size.
The renewal fills the very-short-range tier under Finland's wider air-defence layering rather than substituting for it — the point-defence coverage that protects specific sites, airbases and mobile columns, distinct from the medium- and long-range systems Helsinki fields separately. Deliveries undated means this is a commitment rather than a fielded capability; the next public marker is a delivery or first-unit announcement.
What the order buys is speed, not a new architecture. Großwald's Signal No. 134 carried the order. Eighteen years of doctrine and training around the RBS 70 carry over unchanged; the NG designation buys sensor and guidance improvements onto a system the Finnish Defence Forces already operates, the faster route to more interceptors in inventory than standing up an unfamiliar system.
