Russia Fires 656 Drones and 73 Missiles at Ukraine; Eight Zircons Pass Unintercepted

The composition mattered more than the count. Ukraine's Air Force reported downing 40 of the 73 missiles and 602 of the 656 drones — a high suppression rate against the mass — but the eight Zircon (3M22) hypersonic anti-ship missiles passed through unintercepted, fired in two waves of four, per Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat. The strike hit Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Poltava; sixteen died in Dnipro and six in Kyiv, more than a hundred were wounded, multiple high-rise blocks, a clinic and a kindergarten were damaged, and around 140,000 Kyiv households lost power.

It was the latest in a sequence of mass strikes on the capital, following the record drone barrage of 14 May and the Oreshnik strike of 24 May — Russia sustaining a tempo of large combined raids designed to find the seams in a thinning air-defence shield.

The proprietary read. The saturation is the delivery system for the hypersonics. Six hundred drones and seventy missiles are not the threat — they are the noise that exhausts the interceptors and the operators, so that the few weapons that cannot be stopped anyway arrive against a shield already spent on everything else. The unintercepted Zircons are the data point Europe's interceptor programmes are racing: a hypersonic anti-ship missile turned land-attack weapon, against which the continent currently fields no answer.
