Kyiv Dates the Freyja Anti-Ballistic Prototype to the First Half of 2027 as the Costing Committee Convenes

Ukraine's security council put a date on Europe's attempt at a cheaper Patriot alternative on 27 July: a working Freyja prototype in the first half of 2027, with a costing committee yet to meet for the first time and the financing vehicle still undecided.
The coalition's rationale is narrower than air defence. Ballistic missiles arrive at several times the speed of sound on a steep terminal dive, and the American Patriot is the only system in Ukraine's inventory that reliably stops them, while Reuters records that Europe's own flagship ground-based systems — the Franco-Italian SAMP/T and the German IRIS-T — have not yet proven capable of downing them. Patriot supply is meanwhile constrained by politics, thin stocks and a long production cycle.
Aloian also wants manufacturers in the room alongside governments: "The coalition should be practical rather than political." The open architecture is the mechanism — a buyer plugs in the radar it already owns or already builds, a Danish Weibel set in Denmark, a Saab set in Sweden. One of June's reported conversations has since become paper: Fire Point's strategic partnership with Hensoldt, pairing its FP-7X interceptor with the German firm's TRML-4D radar.
What arrived on 27 July is the skeleton of a programme — a date, a committee, a costing exercise, a proposed fund — and not a cost estimate, a system-level test plan, a seeker contract or an industrial allocation. Then line the dates up. The coalition wants a demonstrable system in the first half of 2027 while Fire Point's own first ballistic interception test is dated between mid- and end-2027 depending on which company statement is taken. Either way the prototype marker measures assembly rather than proven interception, and the seeker — still an option rather than a contract — sits on the critical path of both. As Großwald Signal No. 110 noted, the outputs to watch from the first steering committee are the research and development cost estimate and the shape of the financing vehicle: a standing fund, or ten national budget lines.
