IRIS-T SLM Demonstrator Tested at Sea During “Andøya” Exercise
German Navy and Diehl Defence conduct first sea trial of a navalized IRIS-T SLM system

During the German Navy’s Maritime Firing Exercise 2025 (“Andøya”), Diehl Defence tested a navalized demonstrator of the IRIS-T SLM air defense system on the frigate Baden-Württemberg (Type F125). It was the first live firing of a maritime variant of the system.
In cooperation with the Navy, an Anti-Air-Warfare (AAW) module was developed and installed on the ship’s C-deck within roughly ten months. The test was conducted under near-operational conditions and aimed to evaluate system integration, engagement procedures, and missile behavior in the maritime environment.
The IRIS-T SLM, which has seen operational use in Ukraine as part of Germany’s ground-based air defense deliveries, achieved the expected results during the exercise. According to Diehl Defence, all assigned test objectives were met.
The trial represents an initial step toward assessing the system’s suitability for naval adaptation and provides data for future procurement and integration planning within the Bundeswehr’s air and missile defense programs.
